Busy night

Got some studying for a test tomorrow, Computer Science assignment, and some other stuff. BUT I still wanted to stop by and blog.

I was watching the All-Star Game this weekend and now have the TV on the Spurs/Pistons game and I saw that Allen Iverson FINALLY cut off his braids! One of the OGs has finally ended the era. AI has been synonymous with cornrows like Charlie Chaplin's mustache, like Ice Cube's beard, like Michael Jackson's skin!

First we had Carmelo get rid of em, now AI, is this the beginning of the end of the trend? I remember when I was in 7th grade, the look was SO popular. A lot of my friends would be growing their hair out, we'd see them all fro-d out on Friday, then they'd come back with their hair braided on the following Monday.

Everybody was tryin' to get their hair braided circa 2001-2002 lol.

Anyway, the Song of the Day is "Rule" by Nas featuring Amerie off his great album Stillmatic back in 2001. I think it's quite the underrated Nas track, in terms of balancing catchiness/mainstream-ability while still being decent lyrically. The knock on Nas has always been that his beat selection has been questionable and he doesn't have the mass appeal/marketability of that other NY rapper, Jay-Z.

I'll agree with some but it's not like Nas has been ignoring the mainstream completely. He's had some great songs that could have gotten airplay and been a hit with the mainstream, if only it had gotten proper promotion. Unfortunately, when people say Nas doesn't really care about blowing up to the level of Jay-Z, they're right. Nas doesn't really want the limelight, I think he is content right where he is. Not the "most popular" rapper in the mainstream but he's got a status where he's the guy that EVERYBODY appreciates and respects.

Most people know Nas isn't popular like Jay-Z but they do recognize his talent and how good he is. He's the People's Champ. And that's not necessarily such a bad thing.
